| THURSTON PARISH COUNCIL Parish, town and community councils are the most direct form of democracy in England and Wales. Thurston Parish Council has been in existence since 1894 and is therefore one of the oldest parish councils and in 1994 celebrated its centenary with various activities to commemorate this. The Parish Council is an elected body comprising eleven Thurston residents and whose sole function is to ensure that your village is efficiently and economically run using a proportion of the annual Council Tax income. We meet each month, generally on the first Wednesday of the month at the Cavendish Hall to discuss current village issues. Members of the public are encouraged to attend these meetings and have the opportunity during the meeting to raise any topic relating to Thurston for consideration and comment by the Councillors or for referral to District or County Councillors or Council Officers. Meeting arrangements are displayed on the village notice boards. The Parish Clerk is responsible for advising parishioners of Council meetings as well as Parish, District Council and Parliamentary elections within the statutory time on these notice boards. We have the following groups Finance, Traffic, Street Lighting and Footways, Planning and Recreation Grounds and these groups advise the whole council on these matters. Councillors, and other residents, also represent the Parish Council on various organisations both within the village and outside. Briefly the range of Parish Council responsibilities are sports and recreation facilities and grounds, children’s play areas and equipment, sports pavilion, formulating byelaws, Street lighting and pavements, street cleaning and maintenance of public areas, public rights of way and the like. The Parish Council also comments on all planning applications and influence, through recommendations based on councillors’ local knowledge, the District Council’s decisions. Since a change in the Local Government and Rating Act 1997, parish councils in rural areas have been granted further powers to provide car-sharing schemes, make grants towards operating bus services and fund investigations into transport requirements. They can also contribute to traffic calming and safety measures by the Highways Authority and install crime prevention methods. THURSTON PARISH COUNCIL

Thurston
Emergency Responder Scheme Did you know that our team of first responders was first on the scene at three emergency calls in Thurston in December? If you need to dial 999 in the event of needing an ambulance there is a team of trained people, headed by Andy Sprake in Thurston who may be sent to you first and assist you until the ambulance arrives. This is a scheme which is working well and which our village should be proud of.
